TESTING HOME SEPARATED MILK.
Some little time' back we remarked in these columns on the great waste which is going on in butter-fat by way of the separation of milk on the / farm. Wer recommended at the time that dairy factories should take this matter up and encourage their suppliers to have their skim milk tested ! at frequent intervals. We are pleased to note that at least one factory lias taken up this matter. At the last meeting of directors of the Kairanga Dtiry Factory, the company’s manager, Mr. Bathgate, submitted a scheme whereby he would test free of cost the skim-milk submitted by any of the company’s cream suppliers. The directors readily accepted the manager’s Offer and it is hoped ‘ suppliers will not be slow in availing themselves of the services so unselfishly offered. From information obtained since previously referring to this matter, we are more than ever convinced that a great necessity exists in testing home separated milk. An instance was brought under our notice, where the usual test bottle for testing skim-milk was found to be inadequate to read the butter-fat and an ordinary milk test bottle had to be resorted to.
It is to be hoped that 'other ./ factories will follow the example of the Kairanga Company and that before very long the testing of skim-milk will be looked upon as part of the routine work of a butter factory for the matter affects both supplier and factory.
