QUARTERLY MEETING. T-lie quarterly meeting ctf members of the Shannon Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday evening The president (Mr T. C. Thwaites) presided over a small attendance of members. PRESIDENT’S REPORT. The president in opening the meeting said that during the quarter the Executive had had different aims in view and these had been pushed along as occasion offered. The petition for the extension of the tele- ' phone hours had been completed, 75 per cent, of the subscribers having signed it, but if time had permitted hiore signatures could have been obtained, but this was the required number and it had been handed to the Postmaster (M.r Jones), who had • since forwarded 4 to the Department and they had been advised the request was receiving consideration, in respect to the Railway Station, since
the last quarterly meeting new shelves have been erected, in the luggage room which would relieve a lot of the congestion, but this was nothing like what was required. The matter re the Fire Brigade had been held in abeyance as the Executive 'felt it was no use an expert visiting shannon tor advise until some finality was come to with the water scheme. No further communcation to the application re the High School had come to hand but they should soon hear from the Department.. He said he had hoped for more favourable replies from the DentaJL Associations in regard to getting a dentist He had since been m t OU -Ch with a man who. would visit the town at Easter and if he. was satisfied with the possibilities of the place will commence practice. A favourable reply was received from the Blanket Society that a nurse would be available, tq visit Shannon one day a week and it now rested with the Chamber to call a meeting of citizens to decide. A guarantee of £2O per year was required and ways and means wifi have to be arranged to raise this sum. Several matters have been dropped but these will doubtl.ess come up again, particularly that in reference to the fßujckley-Koputaroa road. He said that a suggestion had been made-to him that the dredges should be used lor the work and U had been estimated that with the aid of one dredge, £SOOQ would do the work. This piece o.f road would be a big acquisition to Shannon and it would becoJfie a main highway. It would be level and do 1 away with the hills. Although §wampy he had been assured by those who knew tlds land that there was a good solid foundation and should present no difficulties in putting it through. The Eketahuna Chamber of Commerce had been written to urging the extension of the road from Mangahao to Eketahuna. There was. a gap , of eight hides, through rough ’country. No doubt, if the road was put through it would be a benefit to Shannon. So far a reply had' not been received from Eketahuna. In conclusion lie said the record of the work for the quarter. though not great, was encourag T ing, but he would l.ike to see members take more interest in the work of the Chamber. There was a movement to form an international chamber oi commerce which he. thought would be a good thing which if we linked up with would bring about good feeling and a better understanding m c° inm€ rc|: (;)RßESi p C>NDEN CE From the Chief postmaster acknowledging receipt of petition re extension of telephone hours advising that toe subject of it will receive immediate attention. „ _ Replies were received from the Dental Associations at Auckland, Yvellington tchxistchurch amd Dunedin t to a Sent dentist for Shannon each of whom expressed reg gt that they did not know of any dentist wno could avail himself of the opening offeSig in Shannon, but they would keen the matter in view. He did not think under the circumstances half an houi •was unreasonable for ordinary calls. The President said some time ago used to take anything up to to in hours to get Wellington, but since the ex-tra wire had been put through there was a big improvement Mr Tippler said the staff was not be blamed; it, was a. question of mo\ln.to get an extra wire.
It was announced at a meeting of the English Bugby Union that the profits from the AH Blacks’ tour "as £2.1,000, which sum Is divisible among the clubs of England, Wales and Boland. The meeting did not entertain a proposal to send a team to New Zealand in 1926, but whs of opinion that it minht be practicable later. Mr G. Carter, who for the past 32 years has been farm .manager at the POrirua Mental Asylum, retires this week on superannuation.
