BUTTER AND CHEESE.

Although the present rise in butter is most welcome it is doubtful whether the improvement will be of any great duration. The estimated arrivals for the next three months are very heavy and it is a question whether the market will be in a position to absorb such large quantities without the price of New Zealand butter going below 160 s. per cwt. The following table shows the quantities of butter estimated to reach Great Britain during the next few months:— March April May

little and the demand is quiet but steady. Besides the "Hertford" which is discharging at present, there is one more steamer with cheese reaching London this month and a slight rise might take place. It must not be forgotten though that the present month .started with 8„500 tons of cheese on hand a>.id no very serious movement need be expected. New Zealand is practically the only cheese arriving Home at present and for several months to come, other countries only supplying approximately 2000 tons per month. The estimated arrivals for the next, three months are approximately as follows: March April May Tons Tons Tons New Zealand 12,000 9,000 11,700 Other countries . . 2,000 2,000 2,0tf0 As the estimated comsumption of imported cheese is in the 'neighbourhood of 11,000 tons per month, it will be seen that there will be no shortage for some time to come. At the same time there will be no great surplus of supplies and as large quantities of New Zealand cheese are generally being bought for storage purposes towards the end of the season, a rise in value is indicated by the above figures towards that period of which cheese factories should make the.fullest use.
