PETITION TO CLOSE THEM
A petition signed by thirty residents who reside in uie vicinity of Vance Street came before the Borough Council at its meeting on Tuesday evening asking the council to take steps iq condemn and ciose the saieyarus, situated in Vance Street, lor me following reasons:—(i) That they consider the saieyaros insanitary and a menace to the health ol tins part of trie town, inasmuch as they a.ie never cleaned out, besides dead animals have been left there ujitiiburled oy lite residents or devoured by dogs. (2) Also they consider the yards, a public nuisance inasmuch as uiey are used as a holding paddocK 'sometimes for as long as fourteen days in some cases amu the bellowing ol cattle by . night is a disturbance to the ireskients. (3) That the yards I are a danger to the young people inasmuch as the cattle are driven'down
Vance Street towards the railway through one of the most thickly populated parts of Shannon, besides which the tennis cowls have to be parsed. The Mayor said tne yards were cer'tauiiy a nuisance. The Town Clerk said that some time ago the Department of Health wrote to the Council asking them to take steps to provide the. registration of all sale yards within its district anu that a by-law be made fixing the fees lor registration, but the Council decided at the tinle to allow the matter to stand over until the by laws were revised. The Town Clerk also said that it should be insisted upon that all yards, pens, etc., be thoroughly cleaned within 24 hours of the termination qf a sale. Cr. Butt said the Health Officer had informed him that all pens should be paved and drained, as if this was not done the yards could not be kept "sanitary, as at present there was no drainage. Some of the councillors were of opinion that if the yards were closed i there was a possibility of losing the sale from the. district.
Cr. Murray said the,Council should not take a weak stand if it was a matter of health. Finally it was' decided that the owners of the yards be Avritten to requesting them to make the yards sanitary and that they be kept sanitary and also the nuisance of cattle being kept for some time in the yards should cease as they are a nuisance to the inhabitants and that t)he yards should be for sales only and not lor paddocking stock.
