COUNTY RATES.
TEN PER CENT ADDITIONAL AFTER SATURDAY.
To-morrow is the last day on which rates may be. paid and escape the additional ten per cent imposed in all cases where rates are unpaid iby that date. According to Statute a local 'body can demand rates fourteen days after the issue of notice that they are due, but the usual practice is to allow tihe six. months and 14 days, after which time the additional 10 per cent becomes .payable. This additional 10 per cent is not an optional charge w.ith local bodies., but is arbitrarily fixed by the Hating Act. It is understood that there is a. fair percentage of rates still outstanding, and that it is the intention of the County Council to take drastic action for their collection in the near future. The matter is to be fully discussed at next meeting of the Council.
