RECORD AUSTRALIAN BUTTER PRODUCTION.

,y On a "number of occasions "Rusticus" has pointed out that Australia during the present season, has greatly contributed towards the heavy depression in Colonial butter on the London market. Although that country had ] an exportable surplus of less than ' 30,000 tons of butter in it was estimated early in the present season that this amount was likely, to be increased to 50,000 tdns this year. Recent advice received from Sydney appears to indicate that this estimate is very much below the actual figures, and that it is fully expected that the total exports from Australia will reach something like 65,000. tons. Needless to say, such an increased supply must seriously affect an already over supplied market. Information has also come to hand relative to the Commonwealth stabilisation scheme.' A conference representative of all the Commonwealth dairy interests met in Melbourne and .nanimously agreed to a scheme for stabllsing the Australian markets for butter and cheese on lines known as the "Pater&on scheme" by means of a voluntary levy on producers. Payment from this fund of a premium of Sd per lb upon all butter and ljd per lb on all chsese exports will be made and an inter-State committee has been appointed to draw up an agreement for signature by manufacturers. If factories generally endorsed the Bcheme it is likely to come into operation next season. The object of the scheme i& to induce manufacturers to export butter with the result that the local market will be held at a higher figure than otherwise would be the case.
