"FOR £15."

DR. THACKER'S OHALLiENGI•:. •A FIFTY YARDS' SWIM. Dr. Thacker, at a recent meeting ofthe Lyttelton Harbour Board, asked if the board had jurisdiction over the Sumner and New Brighton beaches. He .said that the New Brighton Borough Council had decided -to have bathers arrested if they went into dangerous places after being warned, and he wished to know if the board could help the council. The undertow from the Waimakariri made the New Brighton beach unsafe, especially where there were pot-holes." Mr. Cyrus Williams said that the New Brighton foreshore was vested in the borough council, but the board had jurisdiction over the Sumner beach.

Mr. W. J. Walter *aid that it made him wild to hear of. bathers who went out of the safely zone. They .should be dealt with severely. Mr. R. Macartney said that the borough -council could be trusted to deal with its own affairs. Local bodies could make by-laws and enforce them. Mr. M. J. Miller said that the borough council could manage its own affairs quite well. He could swim, but did not know whether the doctor could. Dr. Thacker: I'll take you on at any time for fifty yards. Dr. Thacker moved that the board's solicitor should be asked for advice as to whether the board had jurisdiction. Mr. Miller: The doctor is only talking- to the gallery now. Dr. Thacker: All right, I'll put down £ls agai'-jst you at lifty yards. The motion was seconded and carried by eight votes to four. Dr. Thacker: Four assistant suieiders. The Hon. R. Moore ; jokingly suggested that other members should put in £1 each to find Mr. Miller's entrance money, and that the contest should take place at the board's picnic
