SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The. monthly meeting -of the Shan•noii School Committee was held last evening. Present; Messrs R. L. lippier (chairman) and Watkins, Chriswan, Warrington, tiustql'sen and: WCarlyle (secretary). Consideration o.f holding the annual scnooi picnic was held oyer until the next meeting.

A letter was .received from the secretary iQf the Education Board stating that the Board are prepared to undertake the covering ojf the roof of the mcycle shed with iron. The secretary of the Board ufiluiied title resignation of Mi's C. M. Peach and the appointment of Misses Rij iiuffam, and M. Williams as assistant teachers.

The. secretary of the. Board notified that the Inspectors are making arrangements tq re-examine the sixth standard pupils of the school at the end of the "first term, viz., during the last week in May.

The ; secretary .of. the -Education Board wrote forwarding application form to have the Borough, vyat.er installed at the school, and punted out that the Council's charge for water 01 £lO per. annum was higher than in other places, it 'being the practice of most towns to make, a considerable reduction in the case of schools and in some cases the water was supplied free, of charge, as it was paid for in part by the parents in rates. The Board asked that the Committee approach tlie Borough Council with a view i.o getting a reduction in the rate.

The chaiirman said the rate of £lO per annum was too high. The school belonged to the town and a large numlber of the parents were ratepayers and he agreed that the Council should make a substantial reduction or even Supply the water' free.

Mr Watkins contended that if the Goinmittee are responsible for the water charge, the Council should supply title water free of charge. it was pointed out that the Committee would bave to pay the rate if it was charged, as the Board only provided the money for the installation. Mr Christian moved that a letter be written to the Borough Council embodying the contents of the letter from title Board and ask that the water be given free as the Committee were responsible for any charge made.—-This was carried.

It was decided to* have the gardens at the school put in 'order before the opening date. + A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
