AN ENGINE DISABLED.
TROUBLE WITH TRAMWAY BUS. There is an interesting puzzle which the Christchurch Tramway Board is li ying to elucidate at present. Jt is in the form of a question, “Who put the carborundum powder in the engine of one of its motor char-a-bancs?” So far nobody has been able to answer the question, and, as is usual with these strange happenings, the whole affair is “wrapt in mystery." One day last week (says the Sun) 1 he Tramway Board took over a motor char-a.banc, which was in a city garage, with the intention of putting . , it on the TJryndwr run. The cost of the vehicle was somewhere There was a little trouble in starting, but after a while the engine got going, and the bus started on its first journev in the competitive game of catching ihe elusive passenger. However, it did not last long, the engine flatly refusing to budge, and flic char-a-banc had to be towed back ' to the shelter of a garage. An investigation showed that a large quail lily of carborundum powder had been used to disable the engine, which will have to be thoroughly overhauled. The authorities at the garage from which the char.a-banc was obtained knew nothing about the matter, as / (hey had not seen anyone tampering with the engine. Carborundum powder, which is of a harder quality than emery, is used for grinding the valves of engines.
