AUSTRALIAN DAIRY EXPORT CONTROL ACT

AFFIRMATIVE RESUI/T BUT DISAPPOINTING POLL. The detailed results of the voting as to whether the Australian Dairy Export Control Act shall come into force are now to hand and disclose an indifference on the part ol’ the dairy farmers, far beyond•the one shown during the taking of the New Zealand Referendum. The table set out below will show that in some of the States (Tasmania and West Australia) only about 10 per cent. • of the whole of the dairy producers entitled to vote availed themselves of that privilege. As was expected, Queensland turned the Act down, by a majority of 346 votes, but as the Dairy Control Act is a Federal measure, this will not affect the general position. The Act is only of real importance to those States, that export a large portion of their produce, such as Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and this fact is well reflected in the voting. Seeing that Australia now possesses practically the same machinery as New Zealand for the purpose of regulating and controlling her export ol ! butter and cheese, it will be of interest to watch and see if these facilities can be used for the mutual advantage of the producers of these #wo countries. It is quite possible, that in questions of shipping, distribution and marketing a certain amount of co-operation between the two dairy boards may become of great benefit to the dairy industry during certain periods of the year. The following are the results of the poll:

• - State Voters. Voted. Not Voted. For Against. New South Wales 6,093 12,907 4,687 863 Victoria 10,151 41,549 8,330 951 Queensland 6,932 8,298 2,982 3,346 South Australia 22,000 1,700 20,300 1,244 300 Tasmania 4,232 616 3,616 485 63 West Australia 381 2,619 342 39 Total . . .. 23,497 91,665 17,970 5,562 Per cent. Per cent Per cent Per cent Per cent Percentages: 22 78 16 i (A slight discrepancy in cabled figures is no doubt due to informal votes).
