The fortnightly meeting of the fiorough council was hold m the council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present; The Mayor (Mr Muuiucfij, and Crs. Gunning, Curran, Murray, Butt, and Hyde. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received front the chairman’'•of the No. 9 District Council stating that it has been decided to accede to the request o# the Council for a conference or local bodies re replacing the spans oi tne Manawatu bridge on the Shannon-Foxton road, tliat were washed away, with a /temporary structure.—lt was decided that the council’s delegates be empowered to advocate the replacing of the spans with a temporary structure and Hie contributions towards cost by the local bodies to be pro rata on valuation. The Mayor, Cr. Flyde and the Engineer were appointed to represent the Council at the conference. THE WATERWORKS SCHEME,
The Engineer (Mr Edwards) reported as follows:—The work of 'aying the pipes in the reticulation of the streets is proceeding quite .satisfactorily. 1 have to point out that l have 'adopted the plan of simultaneously laying down the pipes and fittings up to the building line ready to receive the private connections. J find this by far tire, most economical way ol doing the work chiefly for the reason that the men finish as they, go. Owing to the fact that materials have come to hand to employ two extra labourers, tw:o men have been put on. The water lias been turned on to parts of the town and so far we have been able to supply at most of the points where applications, have been made for it. It is, however, utterly
impossible to connect every part of I lie town simultaneously. Respecting tin: matter of charges for water outside of. the Borough boundary I nave to report as. follows:—In the case ol the Fitzherbert water , supply ■ under .pressure the cost to the settlers is by rate and works out at 4s per acre. In the. case of one of the Government irrigation schemes where the water is supplied to the settlers in races Without pressure, file charge is at the rate of. IQs for each acre for live s months only in each year, l am given to understand by the Town Clerk oi I,evin that the annual change for a single house is £3 per each connection; for. a house with five acres it is £4 per connection per annum and. in such cases the County Council lays the water on in the road and is repaid by the consumers. In the case under question on the Shaimon East Road, the Borough has laid the 8-incli service main on the road and there are three connections put in for the farm of 200 acres. The connections cost ,the Borough £3 15s. On this land, which 1 am given to .understand, is one farm, there are two residences with milking buildings and ordinary outhouses* This informal] *- ri I. tiust will enable the* Council tc make a reasonable charge, for the water. The report was referred To the Waterworks. Committee f.or consider aII Tiie Engineer estimated ‘jmt. the sum of £4BO will ; works scheme. He said the counc i will recoup a. portion of I)h,s amount by fees, for connections and tne saw The Town Clerk pointed out that it this estimate was right, the work should be completed for. the sum raised, viz., £12,100. GENERAL. - It was agreed to supply latepayers with half-inch galvanised iron watei pipes for laying on the watei at m Pt A1 1 meeting of Ihe Council it was decided to observe Wednesday as the weekly half holiday.
