VALEDICTORY.

CONSTABLE McGREGQR FAREA large, and representative gathering assembled in the Club Hotel last evening to bid farewell to Gohsta'ble McGregor, who is leaving for Christchurch shortly on promotion to the position of Sergeant. Mr Cooper, Mangaore, "presided, and in 'bidding God-speed to Sergeant and Mrs McGregor on behalf of tnose present, and the people of Shannon generally, spoke'of the excellent work done for law. and order, by . the guest of the evening during his connection with the town. The work, of the police, he said, especially in a place like Shannon, was such as required more than firmness and courage. It necessitated in an equal degree tact, and a knowledge 'u.'f human nature, which were inborn rather than acquired. These attributes their guest had always displayed in a.n admirable degree, and it was with the greatest regret that the people Qi the town heard of his going. At the' same time they were glad tq hear of his well-deserved pror motion, and much ajs thqy would have liked to retain his services to the town, were pleased to see ability recognised. In the larger sphere to which he was going, Sergeant McGregor would have opportunities. Qt advancement' which were denied liini in Shannon, and those present hoped that before long they would he able to congratulate him on stiU further promotion. On behalf, of those present lie asked Mrs McGregor to accept a. case of stainless cutlery as a small, mark of the to'wnpeople's appreciation of herself and her husband, not only as representatives Qif the law hut as citizens..

Amongst others present who spoke were Messrs Murray, Johnstone, C. Spiers, W. S. Carter, J. T. Bovis, G. Mitchell, C, C. Franks, J. Beard, B. Gordon, Jones and Hudson, who paid a high tribute to Sergt. (McGregor's ability, and also to his. unfailing interest in the progress of the town, and popularity from a social point, of view. , .

A very pleasant and social evening concluded with the singing of "For he's a Jolly Good Fellow," and "Auld Lang Synq."
