HIGH SCHOOL.
Ilu furtherance of Shannon’s, claim for a District High School, a number of parents, incluumg solne ladies, met at die Council Chambers last evening to discuss toe matter. Mr .Thwaites presided- Mr 'Tippler, chairman of toe School Committee, and Messrs Warrington and Christian, members of the. committee, were also- present. The chairman pointed out that owing to the. small number of passes at the examination of toe Sixth Standaid pupils, the list of names of pupils already forwarded to the Education Board, who would attend if a school was opened in Shannon, would have, tq be revised. A canvass of toe adjacent districts had been made of those who would attend, but from the reports to hand only seven fresh names were likely to- be added. Parents present expressed dissatisfaction at toe manner in which the recent examination was carried out, and were Of opinion toe children who’ had failed should have a re-examina-tion when the school re-ope.ned, as they, contended they had hot -been allowed sufficient time; that subject matter was introduced in the examination which toe children had hot been coached in; also that toe change of masters had caused the pupils to lose continuity of instruction, and they felt sure that judging by the year’s work a much larger percentage of pupils should have obtained their proficiency. It was then decided by the meeting that a letter be sent to the chairman of toe School Committee to be forwarded to toe Education Board expressing the, wish of toe parents that the children who had failed at the recent examination have a re-exanun-ation and a petition he circulated among parents for signatures to that effect which will set out toe reasons as stated above for toe request. Mesdames Ewart and Smith were appointed to get toe required signatures. Mr Tippler, chairman of toe School Committee, said he would forward to the Education Board the new. list of 20 signatures, pointing'out that seven more at least had been and in view of a re-examination of Sixth Standard pupils. those numbers most probably would he considerably augmented. \ . . A vote of thanks to the chair .terminated the. meeting. -
