PUBLIC MEETING UA MONDAY

On Wednesday evening Messrs, liiwaites arm Hyde, representing- the bnannon Chamber of Commerce, waned on the school Committee lor the purpose of discussing the advisability o-l tire committee pushing on with their effort to secure a District High s>chooi at Shannon.

Mr Thwaite.s said that the Chamber mit that, all sou-roes had not been exhausted in obtaining' the required number ol pupils and they thought a thorough canvass, should /be made ol Mouttxi, Koputaroa, Maker ua and Tokomaru and the Chamber had also suggested . that a public meeting -of parents be. called and the position explained to them, in the meantime he would suggest they get in touch with the o.utside places. There was no doubt, he said, of the advisability of having a high school ill Shannon as t-liere were, a lot of parents, who would not send their children to Palmerston North on the train. It. h;ia been suggested that Levin would no more suitable, but tney would still -be in the same position. There were several parents vvho would send their children to a high school if one,was here. ‘The question had been raised that Shannon would not have such good teachers as t.he larger places, but lie pointed out that the pupils would receive more individual attention, which would more than compensate for the teachers. He would like to see a public meeting of the parents called and the matter fully explained. Mr Hyde, in. endorsing the previous speaker’s remarks, said that whereever a High School had (been started it had -been a big struggle, hut when got going they had no* trouble In keeping up the required number of pupils. He said the school passes had been disappointing and were responsible for upsetting their calculations. f ■

After hearing tiie suggestions from the Chamber of Commerce the School Committee decided, on the motion of Mr Watkins, “That they adiopt the Chamber’s suggestion to call a public meeting of parents and also gel in touch With parents at, -Moutoa, Makerua, Koputaroa and Tokomaru.” It was decided to hold the meeting on Monday evening next at 8 o’clock, in the Council Chambers, and members.. vvere appointed to canvass the districts mentioned, before that date. It was resolved that the Education Board be written tg asking them to hold over consideration of the application till their next, meeting, pending further enquiries being made.
