SHANNON—FOXTON BRIDGE.
A CONFERENCE FAVOURED.
At Tuesday niglit’s meeting of tiie Borough Council the letter from the chairman of No. 9 Main Highway District was dealt with in respect to the Shannon— ponton bridge, re replacing the spans of the. bridge that were recently washed away, with a .temporary structure of minimum width estimated tq cost £I2OO, and asking the Council in conjunction with the ivianawatu County Council and Foxton Borough Council what proportion of the cost of a .temporary structure each local body will be Availing to find, also whether the Council and the other two local bodies concerned are willing to shoulder the risk of the temporary structure being washed away before the erection of a new bridge can be completed, which will pnobably .be two or three years. The Town Clerk said he had received advice that the Manawatu (Jouiitv Council and Foxton Borough Council had agreed to call a conference of those public bodies mentioned. ‘ I.l® ‘ cr. Carter contended the whole -business had been a bungle and that a temporary span should have be.en put cn at die time instead of going to the expense of a punt which in his opinion was nQt workable, and was ridiculous. By using a punt they were going back 30 or 40 years. 'The Mayor then moved and Ci. carter seconded: “That the chairman o the Main Highway Board -be written to stating that the Council favoured a conference being held by the local bodies, mentioned and that whenua County Council be included.
