IMPORTANCE OF LIMING

After this wet summer a dressing of lime, on all soils which benefit by liming, can be specially recommended. It will exert a drying influence oh the soil, making it more easy to work. The advantages of dressings have been summarised as follow: — Although it is not classed among the essential plant food, <as are nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash, it is certain that all crops require a proportion for growth and healthy development. It cures sour land, and by so doing improves the herbage grass lands. It breaks down lockedup organic matter of the soil, rendering it available for plant nourishment. It liberates the dormant mineral substances, such as potash ahd phosphates, in the soil. It improves the physical condition of heavy soils. Finally, its presence in adequate quantities in the, soil enables fertlisers such as superphosphates and sulphate of ammonia to act with a great amount of benefit.
