ENGLISH HOT SPRINGS

The villagers of Stroude, near Windsor, had a novel experience when, as a result of boring operations, a hot water, spring was struck and greai quantities of steaming 'water overflowed from the well. The meji ai work boring the well had reached about 1400 feet, when there was a tremendous rush of water at an estimated volume of 160 gallons a minute. The boring parties had to scatter quickly for the water was, hot and clouds of vapour arose from it, the heat of the spring at its source being 97 degrees Fahrenheit. The water rushed down an embank. ment in a huge stream to the Egham road, carrying with it tons of silt ana sand, and spreading out into meadows and gardens. This continued for hours until the supply of water was got under control. 'Motorists, cyclist s ana pedestrians on the road had to make a hurried retreat before the oncoming rush. The sight after the disappearance of the water was remarkabl.e and many tons of sand and earth had to be carted from the road.
