CORRESPONDENCE. Application was received (for the use of the Domain on New Year’s Day for the purpose of holding a “People’s Picnic” and to be allowed to make a charge.—Granted. From Moynihan. Rros. asking the Council tq reconsider the water charge for farms outside, the Borough, as. it appeared to them the proposed 'Charges were exorbitant.—This request was held over, the Engineer in the meantime to report on the area of land and the Council to go into the/matter thoroughly. . From W. Gardner stating he was anxious to retain the lease of tiie Bora
ough section situated in Nathan Ter r race on the terms of the previous lease.—Request granted conditionally tiikt liS pays for-the advertising. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report was submitted by the Engineer (Mr Edwards):—. “1 toy a. to report that the small pipes for the water supply, have, be.eii delivered by jthe, contractor, i hope very soon now to have the section laid, tested and. the to-enches. filled in.. With reference to the matter of the .qaitohihOTit airoa jot the 'Mangaore.; Stream and its tributaries, the source of the water, supply for Shannon, I beg to suggest that the gazette proclamation • legally vesting the control of the stream in the Mayor and councillors of the Shannon borough and dated the 24th January, 1924, be published in the* newspapers; also that a printed copy of the proclamation be posted, uip in a conspicuous, place on tiie wall of the Borough ; Council office. Ignorance of the law is no defence in case of prosecution, hut i take it the chief objective is to prevent pollution :qf the water. The time has. now arrived for the Council to take such steps as will insure, the purity of the water supplied to the consumers, I also beg to suggest that the Council make application to have ,the whole, area-referred to declared a bird and animal sanctuary (by 1 law. If the step suggested is carried out the effect will he to prevent idlers from polluting the stream and destroying the hush. I am of opinion that the active co-operation of. the. settlers on the' banks of the stream' will be readily secured as the several . interests will toe co-relative. The report was; adopted. " The matter Qf seeing that the stream does not become polluted was left in the hands, qf the Engineer. In respect, to the latter part of the report Mr J. Linklater, M.'P., is to be communicated with ip regard to. having the bush made a bird and. animal sanctuary. ; i ; " 1 ; ; - ■ ’ __
