TWEL\'E Vi TO, d .pjSE If OROWHEN UA COUNTY’S, (; fj "EMPHATIC MANDATE. The ratepayers, of the Horoiwhenua County 'yesterday endorsed in empnauc terms, the council's Main Highuay construction policy, when they curried at the polling booths througnout the County, tnq loan proposals ny more than a twelve to one majority. The voting was not heavy, a lact which can be confidently put down to tne general leeiing which obtained throughout the district that* the carrying of the pbU was certain, many ratepayers in consequence not troubling to come to the booths. The result oi the polling in the various nooths was as. follows;)

Total ... ... 669 53 There were three informal votes at Levin. The result of the. poll must be particularly gratifying jto the Council, the County Ehgineer and the County Clerk—especially'to. the County Chairman—who have devoted considerable time arid trouble to. the perfection of a scheme which has been stated to be essential, to the maintenance of the vmain roads of the district. Although the. scheme is a large one the benefits which are offered are apparent, and it will be a considerable help to the Council in the prosecution of the work, to know that they have the almost unanimous, support of the ratepayers of the district. PUTTING THE WORK IN HAND-

; Speaking. tq a “Chronicle” representative this morning the County Engineer (Mr W. N. Anderson) stated it was hoped to proceed with, the preliminary work immediately. Application for the position of Assistant- Engineer were (being called at once, and as soon as the holidays are over the survey of the work to be done, this including levelling, additional earth-work, and detailed estimates, will be commenced. The position will naturally be influenced to a large extent by the ability to raise the necessary loan of £90,000, but provided the money is available, machinery, some oi which, rollers and crushers will have to he got. from England, will be purchased in readiness for commencing the work of surfacing early next Spring. It is noped to get the whole of the earthwork and formation completed during the coming, winter. Whether this work will, be done by the County or by contract has not yet been decided. The scheme was a big one, and the details of work to be done would entail considerable -labour. , Probably, Mr Anderson stated in conclusion, the matter would be discussed at length at next meeting of the Council, before which time’a considerable amount of. the detail would be. worked out.
