monthly meeting. The monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held, m the Borough Chambers on Saturday, the chairman (Cr. G. A. Monk) presiding. Also present: Crs. Jensen, Catley. Broadbeit, Harkness, Bryant, Ryder, and Whyte. Leave of absence was granted'to Cr. Barber. Accounts.
Accounts totalling £2259 18s 3d were passed* for payment, of this sum £l4oo 19s 8d being the half-yearly instalment of the hospital levy. Manakau Tramway. Mr. Laronx wrote that several of his sheep had had thgir legs broken through getting caught between , the planks put across the North Road Manakau,* between the tramrails, laid down by the Manakau Sawmilling Coy. Two of these had died and he therefore claimed for £3 for the two which were dead and £3 general damages. The chairman quoted the agreement between the company and the Council 'to the effect that the company indemnified the Council against any claims which might arise .through the presence of the tramway. If the company was i not prepared’to recognise its liability the only thing which Mr. Laroux could do was to proceed against the Countyj when they, in turn, would proceed against the Sawmilling Coy.
Water Supply for Manakau. Mr. Charles Evans, Manakau, wrote asking when the suggested Manakau water supply scheme was going to be proceeded with. , The engineer stated that at present he was waiting for the people to define the boundaries of the district. Also he was not of opinion that the water-shed which was over-run with sheep was a suitable one from which to draw water* for human consumption; Samples of water were now in Wellington undergoing examination. As soon as these ,matters were fixed up, something definite could be done. , Referred to the engineer and Or. Bryant for attention. Engineer’s Report. The County Engineer (Mr. W. N. Anderson) reported as follows: 1 During the period just ended the weather has been fine and the work although mostly routine work has been carried put in a very satisfactory manner. No. 2 plant is still working m the Tokomaru Riding .but the metalling in this Riding is now practically com-

order. I have nothing of importance to report on in the Otaki Riding. AU the roads are in good order. A start has been made with the cleaning of Kuku water races. Good progress ha been made with the formation of the Waikawa South Road and a start w 11 be made on Monday witff the sand cuttings oh the Waikawa Beach Road. The roads in the Te Horo Riding are in fair order and one of the small gra - ers is at present working on the Mam R Re ’ Shannon Bridge: I ffavetoreport that at the beginning ol the period I again made an of this bridge in company with Mr. G. Murray, Main Highways engmeer, after going carefully into the matter the Main Highways Board has decided t abandon the idea of repairing the old bridge and suggests re-orectmg same at a site further up the river near the mouth of the Tokomaru , stream. It was also decided to put a punt Oh the river below the old bridge..ltwas impossible to secure a suitable punt for the purpose so after consultation with the -Public Works and Highways engineers it was arranged with S. Wood and Son., shipwrights, Wellington, to have a new punt constructed with the least possible delay. The frames and timber of the new punt and a gang ot men are now on the ground. General. Crs. Harkness and Broadbeit stated that the roads in the Wirokino Riding were in excellent order, better than for. many years, this applying more particularly to the subsidiary roads. U. Broadbeit asked that .Jhe approach to the Poroutawhao' school should o metalled and a culvert put m. Crs. Ryder and Bryant stated that the roads in the Otaki Riding were practically all in excellent order. Or. Bryant stated in reference to the water race through his property that there were a number of people using it ugh through to the'Manakau township, and he would suggest that a■ ■ rate be struck over the length of tne

So Ir4y to a further question the engineer stated that attention was being given to Ellis’s water-race at Manager. Jensen also asked that the scrub along the Rahui Road should be removed Mangaone Road ateo ed attention where water had been scouring across the surface. The engineer’s report was adopted.
