physical drill exercises by the. senior pupils, all bearing evidence ol cue painstaking practice and preparation that had been carried out toy the teachers and children alike. Overtures, played toy the. "Black and White Orchestra, were highly appreciated, this coiiitoinatioii proving itself a valuable acquisition, to the town. During an inter vial, Mr H. L. Tippler, chairman 'of the School Committee, voiced his. gratitude, to the householders for the. support they nuu given and thanked the headmaster and staff for the splendid work done toy tliem in promoting p the concert, .also thq children who had taken part. Proceedings opened with a tableau in the form of a pyramid, in which stood three tiers .-of - hoys, on hands and knees, mounted on one "another, toeing supported on /the wings toy Other boys from the physical drill, class. ..They remained in this position during the singing of the National Anthem, after which the combined performers sang “The Land of Hope and Glory.”- The tableau and singing was. neatly executed and proved a -true indication that the. audience were tp witness a local entertainment above the average.
The items were as follow:—Chorus, “Golden Gate”;, recitation by six infant giris; chorus, “Land of 1 Dunno Where,” by junior boys and girls; solo, “The Little. Grey Bonnet,” Mona lngley; Hoop drill by infant girls; canoe soitg, Masters Carkeek and ’ B. Ransfield and chorus; dance duo, Misses Freda Thompson and Amy W.otton; flower 'Girls’ Song toy junior girls; chorus. “The Capital Ship.” senior boys; Indian club Drill, senior girls; action song, infant boys; chor'us, “Come, to the. Fair,” senior pupils; song, , “Pickles,” junior pupils; duet “Cherry Ripe,” Ivan llenuningsen and Margaret Swindlehurst; recitation; “Baby,” in character, Phyllis Buckman,; chorus, “The Murray Moon,” senior, pupils;, physical drill, senior boys.; song, “Little Washerwomen,” junior girls; Druids’ Vestal dance, eight senior girls, ’ playette in which Masters A. Bowler, E. Christian, 1. Heinmingsen, 1. McLaclilan and H. Gaylord took part, all carrying out their castes splendidly; duet by, the local favourites, FTeda and Josie Thompson.
A nigger troupe consisting of senior boys,, with Mr A. H. Morgan, the headmaster, in the lead, the party singing a number* of coon songs and indulging in many local hits, fairly: brought the house down, an enjoyable. performance toeing brought to a close by the children singing “Good Night.” - ' A feature of the. concert was the confidence displayed toy the children, who put heart and soul into their work and the .result must be very gratifying to their teachers, who have worked so hard for /the past few weeks in preparing them. The teachers are to he complimented on the general arrangements and the excellent and. varied piogiraimne placed before the public and we. trust, that, now tiie ice has been broken with such splendid results, an annual school concert will become perrnan* ent, as Tuesday liiglit’s/performance went to show that the teachers, at the Shannon School are as capable as those of much larger schools in staging a first class entertainment.
