At Saturday’s meeting of the Hor-o-whenuu County Council, the chairman brought up the question of the appointment Qf an assistant to the Engineer in the event Qf the loan p - posal being carried. What was left was that ii tli e loan proposal was cairied next Tuesday, the Council would like authority to call lor applications for the position* immediately so that an immediate survey might be put in hand. There was provision on the estimates for £2OO towards such a man’s, salary. It might he some ume before the loan-money was obtain ui . but the whole survey, taking of cross sections, etc., might he completed at once. These had to he sent in to the Main Highways Board for consideration and the sooner they got on wun this work the sooner they could get the road construction started. Cr. Harkness supported the suggestion. It would, (he said, he. most unfortunate if the County got the. money and were not prepared to pioceed with the work. ; * T Cr. Ryder asked iisuch .a man would be capable Of taking charge of construction, ‘ The Engineer stated that the man they wanted should he primarily a man who was capable of doing survey work and was also a good draftsman. it would he desirable that (he should do a certain amount of overseeing also. ~ ’ The following resolution proposed by Cr. Broadbelt and seconded by Cr. Harkness was carried: “That in' the event of the Main Highways loan be--1 ing carried, application be called for an Assistant Engineer to assist with Main Highways work. The applicant to have survey and draughtsman’s knowledge; salary to he £3*>u 1 per annum.”
