OBSCENE LANGUAGE.
At line Police Court yesterday morning, before Messrs. Guminig and Spencer, J.’sP., three local young men whose names, were, ordered m he suppressed, were icharged wriu using obscene language i.n the eau„. : hours of Sunday morning in Piimi mer Terrace imd Nathan Terrace. * constable McGregor (Conducted the case for the police and Mr Moody appeared on S>e.haflf of the tlnee accused, who pleaded not gujiity, and elected to be dealt with summarily. Constable McGregor stated that at 12.15 a.m. on November 30th he heard men talking in the doorway of the Howard Andrew, Ltd., store. They were discussing different people and obscene language was being used. Witness was then at the railway station. He came over to Andrew's corner and listened and watched them for about ten minutes. They were sitting oil the doorstep. There were no people about and he warned them to go home, also that he would nave them up on summons. Two of the accused went towards the Albion Rotei, while the. other accused crossed the railway line. '‘They had had drink, but were quite capable of going liome.. A few minutes -alter they had separated he Jieard a .whistle from the. direction of the. goousnect. After a while he had reason to- go to tiie railway station and standing at the corner of the P.W.D. cement, shed he was only about five, yards from the men who were on the. road and heard them discussing himself in uncomplimentary and obscene language. They had been there some time, u being 1.30 a.m. when tye arrested them, they haying ignored the warning already given them. Mr Moody said the accused did not remember using the language complained of, and he contended that someone must he affected for line charge to succeed as the. constable was the only, person about. He said the case was a trivial one, As the men did not Remember using the language he would not call evidence. The Bench: They were wanted and were not sufficiently drunk not to understand, and still persisted, ine constable was quite justified m arresting them. . , i , Each, accused was convicted and fined £2 on each charge in default 28 days’ imprisonment. ,
