LEVIN CLUB’S RACES.
FAVOURED BY PERFECT WEATHER
PUZZLES FOR PUNTERS.
Had tde weather been made to order, it couid not nave neen more sausiaciory lor Hie i_.evin Racing Ciuo’s meeting oil Saturday. - Bran - ain sunsmne, tempered oy a ugm breeze during tne atternoon, ootameu tiirougiiout the day, and me enclosure, wtucii has never looked so wellappointed in the history of the Ciuh, presented a brilliant scene, oi colour and animation. The attendance was a record for the course, the-gate tattings being over £sl! better than at the last meeting field in Levin (1922). Amongst the visitors were the. Mon. C. E. JStathain, sir Maui. Pomare, Hon. 'R. Bollard, the Hon. D. G. Guthrie, and Messrs Linkiater, Nasn and Field. jM.’sP.
.The investments were on the whole disappointing, being . £16,169, as against £15,705 for the 19:12 meeting, an increase of £464, which was by no means commensurate with the at-
tendance. The large dividends which were paid were no doubt largely re- . sponsible lor this. The public found its confidence in its judgment shaken at the first * race, when All Melody went o.ut a roaring favourite in • the Hurdles, being backed for nearly half the money invested. Equitable, on the other fiand, was neglected, and' paid a big price, when he beat the favourite as he liked coming up the straight. The punters were just beginning to recover from this shock wh.en in the Hack Handicap, the fourth race on the list, Tongatatoa, a rank outsider, galloped home to the tune of over two score. The only favourite, to win during trie day was" Benmure in the last race.
The Levin Cup was' won by, Bitters after an exciting race. Askari got the worst of the start, and Happy Days and Waetea were the first to show out. Passing the stand Bitters ran to the front, nd Mercy Day moved up. Round the back the order was Bitters, Waetea, Stream, Happy Days and Merry Day. Bitters maintained his lead into the straight, where Pantler came into the picture with Euchre putting in a fast run to the post. Bitters, however, lasted longenongh to win from Euchre by a length, Happy Days was a close third and Pantler fourth.
In the second race, two horses, . Panache anl Sling Camp, lost their riders round the back of the course. An inquiry into the circumstances was held by the stipendiary stewards and judicial committee, who found ' that the occurrence was accidental, , due to the horses galloping into the horse in front as the field closed up.
Bitters’ win provided punters with a further surprise. Merry Day, the top-weight, was made favourite, with Happy Days (Hector Gray up) a good second. Pantler, after his. win at Ashhurst was also well supported. Tihe field of ten was the smallest which faced the. starter during the day.
The recently completed appointments of the Club caine in for much lav o arable comment. These are now thoroughly up-to-date, with the possible exception of the. outside stand, which ii is. .the intention of the Club to remodel and enlarge at an early date. The course, and equipment is now without question the best of any of the. smaller Clubs in the Wellington district. The Club has built to last, in anticipation of a second day's permit and whether this is - secured or nut, the Executive has at least, relieved itself of building worries for the next twenty years.
The stewards, and officers- of the Club may well be congratulated on Die conduct of the meeting which-was generally commended by visitors, especially ' the Parliamentary party. Each' of the stewards was actuated by one desire only—to make ttie meeting a success. Inspired by the president of the. Club (Mr T. Bevan) this lias been the spirit moving the, whole ol the officials throughout the preparations for tiie meeting and during the day itself when a tendency to slack is. often apparent. To the secretary, Mr F. S. Varnham, also, on whose shoulders a considerable cordon of the. work of organisation leli. must be given credit to a considerable measure, for the smoothness with which the meeting was conducted.

' WORLD SINGERS. For some years past, every vocalist of note who has visited New Zealand has praised Fluenzol as an ideal gargle for clearing the throat and invigorating the vocal chords.
Master Sullivan,- of the VanburghBoucicault Company entirely lost his voice early in the Wellington season. His mother writes that a gargle with Fluenzol was wonderfully successful.
