A man named George William Brownlow, wa s brought to Rockhampton from Maryborough, Queensland, two months ago, suffering from a gunshot wound in the left arm: Serious symptoms set in, -with, the result that Brownlow's arm had to be amputated at th e elbow. Developments occurred last week, when Brownlow was charged at the Rockhampton Police Court with .breaking and entering Fossey's store at "Maryborough on August 13 last In the evidence it was stated tnat robberies had frequently occurred at the since December last. On tne night o£ August 23, John Woodleigh, storeman at Fossey's, had decided to camp in the store with a loaded shotgun handy, and he lighted ,a hurricane lamp, which he covered up witn a blanket. At about 11 o'clock heard someone get through the window into the shop, and then saw a man putting articles into a bag. Woodleigh flashed the lamp on t the man, at the earn© time pointing the gun at him and calling out, "Stop or I'll shoot,,,you." The intruder came toward Woodleigh, who saw it was Brownlow. As he lowered the gun it ] went off accidentally, and , the contents lodged in . Brownlow's elbow. ,Brownlow walked toward the window, and Woodleigh- calied out: "Stop George, or I'll drop you," at the same time pointing the unloaded gun at him. Brownlow .replied: "Stop Jack. ■For God's sake don't shoot. You've nearly blown my arm off." '...,. Woodleigh, after rendering first aid, heard the whistle of an approaching train. He raced to the station, and managed to stop the train in time for it to pick up Brownlow and convey him to Rockhampton. Fortunately thei-e was an ambulance man aboard the train, and h© was , able to prevent Brownlow from bleeding to death Subsequently, Woodleigh recovered the goods from the store at Brownlow's residence and at another place, their value being £2O. Brownlow was committed for trial .
