THE SHANNON BRIDGE.

PUNT TO BE CONSTRUCTED. We understand that, the Main Highways Board has decided that it would be unwise to do anything to the Shannon Bridge on its present site beyond necessary measures for the conservation of the remaining spans and timbers. Arrangements have been made by the Public Works Department with Mr Dinnie, the Departmental Engineer at Mangahao, for steps to be taken immediately to make the present structure secure by driving new piles to strengthen it and guard against any further loss. In the meantime it has been decided to restore communication by means of a punt, which will enable traffic to cross the river. Failing a suitable pontoon being located near enough to enable it to be transported to the spot, the Horowhenua County Council will undertake the construction of a punt to plans supplied by the Public Works Department. It is desired both by the Department and County Council to re-open this important road at the earliest possible moment and no time will be lost, we are assured, in putting the projected work in hand.
