FINANCE MEASURES.
RATING FOR HIGHWAYS MAINTENANCE. PAYMENT OF HOSPITAL BOARD . CHAIRMAN. Wellington; Last Night. Amendments to the Finance . Bill were introduced to-day. Local authorities are empowered to borrow, special loans under the Local Bodies LoaMs Act as a contribution towards the costs of constructing main highways. Any County Council which is required, pursuant to Section 18 of The Main Highways Act. 1922, to contribute towards the cost of .repair and maintenance of a'ny main highway, may pay such contribution in whole or 'in part out of the general rates for the whole county, or from any ■riding or ridings thereof, or, in addition to any other rafcng power, may, by special order, make, and levy fori •the purpose a separate rate on all rateable property within the county or •within such portion of the county as mav be defined by special order. The following sub-clause has been isubstituted or the provision in the BUI dealing with the payment of Hospital Board chairmen:—A Hospital Board may, if it thinks fit, pay to the chairman of the Board, by way of remuneration for his services,, a sum not exceeding in any year, the following (a) in cases whore one-fifth per centum of te Board's maintenance expenditure for the previous year does not exceed £IOO, the sum of £100; (b) in cases where one-fifth per centum of the Board's maintenance expenditure for the nrevicms vear exceeds £IOO, an amount* equal to such percentage of maintenance expenditure, or the sum of £250, whichever is the less. Another amendment 'is the dcletio'n of the clause reducing from 6 to 5 per ■cent the rate of interest payable on unpaid death duties.
