LEVIN-MARTON RAILWAY.
MINISTER’S REFUSAL OF NEW - SURVEY. Tiie following telegram was received hy the local Chamber oi commerce Irom Mr W. H. Field, M.P., yesterday:— “Lnikiater and i interviewed the Minister oi . Railways yesterday, me Minister refuses a ruruier survey oi tlie line u.nd says that tine route i as already been expired and that Uie tacts and figures will be placed before tiie Comniission. Suggest that Uie League employ its 'own engineer and also obtain Mr HUey’s evidence.” it may be explained that a survey oi the- line was. made and the League ■engaged Messrs Toogood, Jones and Holmes, engineers, tor ttus purpose, and plans were drawn up and circulated together with other information and approximate cost oi tne work. All this was iuiUy explained* to the Prime Minister and Minister for Railways and other members of a Parliamentary, Party who were takenover the route by the. League some Hiree years ago. The final meeting oiix that occasion wits held in the goods shed at Greatford.
Tlie suggestion that Mr Hiley (late general manager of Railways) "should give evidence is a good one.—Foxton Herald.
AVith regard to-the Minister’s statement that the route lias, already been explored, it may be stated that the 1921 commission, the recent, conference as to reviving the League and the deputation to the Prime Minister and Minister for Railways failed to reveal the existence of survey data. The deputation was promised a survey, but now it appears that one is not’to be made. Evidently this muchdesired survey is something akin to a wdll-o’-tlie-wisp. . .
