BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the 'Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday. Pres- ' ent; Th§ Mayor (Mr W,. Murdoch), and Crs. Gunning, Beard, Curran, Butt, Hyde. CORRESPONDENCE. In reply to a, letter of Jun e 25th from the Borough .Council re iloodgate at the bottom of Stansell's drain, Mr F. Bryant replied as follows:—"This flood/gate ha£ been in over twelve years. From what yen s a y>, it seems the Council have idlowed, the Makerua- Drainage Board to block up the drains which run into the stream at the bottom of Johnston Street. If that, is: so, two of the Council's drains, which rvn through Messrs Gardner and Jas. Curran's land, and my drain which runs between the road (Johnston Street) and my bank have all been blocked. If these drains" are opened up tQ' the stream and a hank on Hie north, side of. Johnston street and my bank raised it may keep most of the I water off the road. If I left my floodgate on Stansell's drain open, the banking done on my property would he useless. Your dratin would get the water just the same and all the lam? down the Buckley road would be flooded. The best thing to do is for all those interested to open up tshte drains running Untio the stream,, bottom of Johnston street and bank the north side and raise my bank, using the earth from where my fence is and moving the fence back a few feet. If all land owners adjoining me agree to my suggestion 1 am wiling to join them and pay my share of 'the cost. I should like to know wiiat; the conditions are between the Council and Mr W. Pearce, whom, I bought the land from as regards tfliis drain. Mir Burling would be pleased to see you at any time on my behalf, and i.f your Council consider my suggestion,- Mr Burling or the Council should cailf a, meeting ol all interested.—lt was decided that Mr Bryant's manager be instructed to open up the floodgate and clean out the. natural watercourse.
jAjii application wins, received for the position of Borough ranger.—Held over for further consideration. Cr. Hyde moving that further applications be called - (or the position im--mediately.—Agreed to. . From the Main Highways Board chairman of No. Q.jCouncil advising that if the Council, desires to obtain any contribution from t'he Board towards maintenance work it will be necessary for the Council to have internal traffic tallies taken over a period oc one week firom 6 a.m,. to midnight. It is to be understood .that the tally must be taken when the traffic is normal and not in a week when any agricultural, shows or-race meetings'are being held. -The Board will only consider an application for assistance towards maintenance and not for any construction work.—Held over until next meeting. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer (Mr Edwards) reported as follows:-"! have to'.report that the laying of. the reticulation pipes is proceeding satisfactorily; the 6-inch mains have "been laid with, the exception of the n chains,, previously referred 'to-at the lower end ol Stout Street. So 1M the pipes ordered trom Wanganui have not arrived. Ihe reason given by the Spiral Pipe Go. is a, shortage' of trucks at-the railway station at' that place. I, However expect them at any time now, F.oity chains of the 4-Inch, diameter P'Pef have been kid in Vogel and balance streets' and Plimnw. Terrace The men in this case have made good progress; the cost per chain lor labour works out at 2fe per chain, I have purchased 24 b&U hydrants at 26s each. The lowest tender price was 36s each and on visiting the importers of pipes and fittings, with the'exception of Duthie and Co., Wat is the price now. With reference to the extra chains of Chinch, pipes ordered, there was no «> in he measurements, the extra, length \\ as used up in the hy-P¥» ordered at the reservoir an d in cutting 6-inch pipes for the bends at the head works, it will (however; be short of about 4 chains of 4-inch pipes. "I have gone very ca.rel.uUy into the question of a system of sewerage for Shannon, but if not out at place 1 suggest a special meeting of the Council to go carefully into this important matter. ~,,, The report as read was adopted, t,, 11d as the engineer's report on a sewerage scheme was very lengthy it S decided to hold it oyer to be dealt with at a special meeting ol the "Council to be held on -Tuesday. November 18th. , 'Hie accounts were then taken ai.d the Council adjourned to enable councillors to meet the members ol the Chamber of Commerce to make final aXgements for the Mongan.no celebration.
