NEWMAN CUP. COMPETITION. On Labour pay (Monday), a team representing the Bulls Club, holders

of the Newman Cup, visited SfiauriQii, bringing with them the Cup, and a match was played on the Jocujl courts against Shannon to give the home team a chance t,o win it. The focal club have on several occasions tried to annex the coveted trophy, hut only once have they been successiul and that was two- years ago, when Bulls made a similar visit. However, on the return match, Bulls again got possession and have successfully defended it ever since. Although a strong wind prevailed ah day and was' anything but pleasant; there was a large number of spectators to witness the match. Several, good games were played but the visiiu,ts again showed supremacy and still retain the cup. The final scores were; Shannon 0 sets to Bulls 15, Hie latter winning by 153 games to Shannon’s 1.19. The following are the results, Shannon players being mentioned first:—

At- the conclusion of the day’s play Mr ‘Bovis president, of the Shannon, Club, on behalf of the members, congratulated the Bulls team on thenwin and paid/ a tribute of admiration to the sporting manner of members Qf the Bulls Club in not, only travelling a long distance to play, but also bringing the cup. He hoped m the near future Shannon wou(ld return the compliment and endeavour toi do better. Though Shannon were beaten 'they were not downhearted, he said. Winners and losers alike mid all had good games and fie hoped the visitors had fihd an enjoyable day. Mr Ralfe,. in suitably responding oxi behalf of the Bulls Club, said they wduld look forward to a visit from Shannon'at an early date when they would he able to return the hospitality to them that they had received during their visit. A most fitting conclusion to an enjoyable day was the dance held in the Druids’. Hall in the evening at which the visiting members ol the Bulls Clubs were guests. Ml* \v - Quarrie officiated as M.C. hi a capable manner and left nothing wanting loi the enjoyment of those prjesent-r MuaHe was supplied by an orchestra consisting of Mrs Butler and Messrs Mason and Briggs, which was an. that could be desired, while the supper arrangements in charge of the ladies’ committee'was excellent. Dancing was kept up until the early hours and an enjoyable time was spent by all present. , ;
