CROQUET SEASON OPENS.
ON THE LEVIN MtWN. The Levin Croquet Club was officially opened .Wednesday, by the Mayor (Mr T. Hobson) in uie presence of some 150 members anff visitors, uieso including representatives ot the F oxton, Shannon, OtaKi unci Haitaitui (Wellington) duns. The result was especially meritorious when it remembered that, the work had been none unaei* difficulties. Upkeep was a costly business, but the members had got together and held a series o. snop-uays. which nad permitted ..-oi some very necessary Amprovements being carried out. Hq understood that another shop-day wo.uld be held in November and (had no doubt Run it would be as successful as its pre- « decessors. The local ladies-wore in a rather unique position for ia Country Club in haying bought their own grounds instead Of getting land from the Borough Council as was the usual thing. A certain amount had tu • be paid off each year and this entailed a kd'ge expenditure. * '• During tlie season, Mr Hobson proceededl, the ladies of the Levin Club had played a number of interesting games; with - outside cluhs. Some 1 they had won and more they had lost, but that did not make any difference. They had taken the matter either way as sportsmen should and had enjoyed the games lor '’themselves. He wished, on behalf, of the Club, to thank Mrs J. D, Brown tor the donation of two buttons for. cofiipetition during the coming year, a gilt which would add considerably to die competition for the year. Again he liad great pleasure in declaring the grounds open. The Mayoress (Mrs T. Hobson) then drove off the first, ball, alter which a delicious afternoon tea was dispensed by the members of the Club,
During' the afternoon a series of competitions were played, the winners being as follows: French. Croquet.—Mrs , Percival (Otaki). . , Clock Croquet.—Mrs Downed {Foxton). Break—Mrs Barr (Foxton). Angles. Mrs Parkes (Foxton). Rings—Mrs Barr (Foxton). A very pleasant afternoon conclud’ed with the presentation by the Mayor of the prizes won in the competition.
