SHANNON BRANCH. MEJBTS. The Shannon .branch of the N.Z. Farmers' Union met. in the Count ju Cb&mb;er ; s on, Wednesday evening. Present; The president (Mr R. L. Tippler) and Messrs G. Mitchell, W. Philips, P. A. Smith, J. DuschensEi, R. c. Collins, R. W. Taylor, H. M. Richards, J. Bowler and D. Reid (secretary).
; The secretary (Mr Reid) reported 1 having attended the Munavvatu Pro- ; vinciai Executive meeting- on Satur- ■ day, October 4th; a,t which a letter , was received from the Hon. McLeqd, Minister of Lands, lacknowledging reI cqipt of resolution protesting against the amendment of the Workers'-Com-i pension Aot in which he expressed j the opinion that the Bill would nqt be dealt with this session. Among otttieir matters before the Executive was the proposal to "Increase members subscriptions to 30s to include free copies of the Farmers' Weekly. He stated the majority oi members did. not favour the proposal and that fqur branches had voted against it and j only two. in favour. A remit from Manakau re trains whistling at railway crossings wa s also dealt W.ith, several members speaking on <the lack of sufficient warning given by trains approaching crossings and it was resolved that the Minister of Railways be written to asking him to enforce the regulation in regard to engines whistling when approaching crossings and that the. whistle be blown for at least ten seconds. GENERAL. It was regolyed .that the chairman and secretary arraiige for a visit oi members and farmers to the Central Development Farm at Levin . about the middle of November.
The chairman suggested, with a view to creating more interest among members, that visits be made to neighbouring branches, where meetings could hie held alternately.—lt Wife decided to arrange to meet at Tokomaru for the next meeting. The chairman complained of the poor quality of metal being placed on the Cqunty roads in this district, by the Horowhenua County Council.' Ho 6aid it should not be tolerated as good" metal is available and if the same quantity was put on, -would would last four times as long. The metal used is being.taken from the pit and is half sand. He suggested the Horowhenua County Council's attention should be drawn to the matter.—<This was agreed to. The question of licensing cream lorries was brought forward by t n e chairman. He said to his mind the proposal was unfair as if the lorries were not on the road collecting oream, there woufld be more carts, and as a result home separation saves a lot of traffic on the roads. These remarks were endorsed by the meeting.
A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
