;, MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held in. the Borough. Chambers, Levin, on Saturday, the chairman, Cr. Monk, presiding over a full Council. Correspondence. Mr. A. Simpson forwarded an amended plan of the subdivision of Messrs W. H. and V. Weggery's property at Waikanae, and asked that the seal of the County Council should be attached thereto. Agreed, Cr. Monk and Jensen with" the County Clerk being empowered to sign the agreement. Waimelia Township. A telegram was . received from Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., asking that the County Engineer inspect the roads of the Waimeha township as it was proposed to sell immediately. The engineer stated that he could inspect on Tuesday Public Works Grants. The district engineer to the Public Works Department forwarded the following schedule of road votes which had been approved by the Hon. the Minister of Public Works, for the year 1924-25, and which were immediately available: — Kawiu-Foxton Eoad £3OO, £ for £. Qhau West Road extension £l5O, £ for £. Otaki Gorge, north hank, £2OO, £ for j

Tokomaru Valley Road extension, £IOO, free to County. I Waikawa Beach Road £2OO, £ for £. | Waitarere Road £SOO, £ for £. The chairman in moving that the engineer's schedule be received stated that there were some of these grants the expenditure of which could he proceeded with immediately. The Waikawa Road was one of these. —Received. . Engineer's Report. The County Engineer (Mr. W. N. Anderson) reported as follows: — .. Tho weather during the period just ended has been very wet and unsettled, and the roads generally have suffered a good deal. the work has been carried out in a satisfactory manner and it is only with constant attention that the roads have been kept in anything like fair order. Tokomaru Riding.—The contract <for metalling the roads in the northern end of this Riding is nearing completion and the County lorry and plant is still working in the southern end. A good deal of maintenance metal has been put out. I have arranged for a supply of 200 cubic yards of clean crushed metal from the crusher at Ohau for the maintenance of the Main Road at Makerua. The roller and.small grader are at present working in this Riding. Wirokino Riding. —I have nothing of importance to report on in this Riding. Approximately 600 cubic yards of maintenance metal was put out during the period on the following roads:—Main Roads, Queen Street, Gladstone, Bruce, Boflton, Hokio Beach, Kawiu-Foxton, Koputaroa-Foxton ,Tavistock, Paiaka, Otarua and Roslyn Roads. The tar-, sealed portion of the- Main Road through the Weraroa Settlement has been repaired and the water-tables in various parts of the Riding attended to. The steel pipes for water : race through Mr. Gapper's property arrived towards the end of -last week and the bridge gang are at present laying same. Otaki Riding.—Everything in this Riding i a in very fair order. The bridge on the Rahui Road has been completed and has been re-constructed to carry the road roller. Re R. B. Kilgour and others petition re state-of bridge on Waitohu Valley Road: I .have -to report that 1 inspected this bridge recently and foum the same in fair order and quite safe for ordinary traffic. The bridge which is a light structure (a second class bridge) has only been built 'for ordinary light traffie, although, during the time a bridge on the Main Road was closed for all traffic, heavily loadedmotor lorries weighing up to. ,10 c tons,

passed over this bridge with safety. It is quite contrary to fact to say (as stated in the petition) that the Otaki end of the bridge had dropped a foot at, least and that one end was gradually sinking. I have inspected this bridge at different times during the past four years and have found no sinking'in that time. ■ s, , Te Horo Riding.—The roads in this Riding are fair to' good. The Main Roads suffered somewhat owing to the wet weather but one of the small graders is at present working -between Otaki Bridge and Waikanae and a man has been put on to maintain this length. The Beach Road, Waikanae, requires crowning up in places. This work.will be gone on with at an early date. Re Hautere water-race extension: During the period Councillor Jensen and myself met Mr. iiethbridge' of water from'creek on western side of his dence at Waihoanga. After inspecting and discussing the bridge agreed to allow" the Council to take all water required on condition that an amount of water to fill a 2-mch pipe was allowed to flow past the proposed intake to the County pipe line. The engineer's report was adopted, the chairman moving that a deputation be sent tp wait on the Minister of Public Works ~ regarding a subsidy towards the re-erection of the Waihoanga Bridge. Cr. Jensen seconded the motion. Provision of Access. Mr. Corrigan, Otaki Gorge, waited on, the Council with a proposal for the expenditure '• of £2OO on a suspension bridge to his property. He r asked further that the County apply to.the Public Works for a grant for approaches. ■ The chairman stated that he doubted that the work could be done for the money in hand. He did not wish to throw cold water on the scheme, however, if it were agreed to, an agreement would have to be entered into with the Council in respect of liability. There would have to be a specification of the work, and the strength of the cables would have to be passed by the. engineer. It was agreed that the engineer inspect the site with a view to ascertaining if the proposal submitted would be suitable.
