MANGAHAO CELEBRATIONS.
COMMITTEES FORMED. A meeting of the Shannon Borough Council and the executive' of the Chamber of 'Commerce was field in the 1 Shannon Council Chambers on Friday evening for the purpose of making Arrangements, as requested by the representatives of’ local bodies who recently, met in-Shannon tot celebrate the turning on of power at Mangafiao. Present; Messrs J. V. Burns, H. Andrew, R. Tippler and T. Thwaites '(Chamber of . Commerce), and Crs. w. Gunning, W. Carter, E. Butt,* J. Curran, J. Murray and A. Hyde qnd J. T. Bovis (secretary). An apology was received from His Worship the Mayor owing to. illness, Cr. Gunning was voted to the chair. \ The secretary reported that the sum Of £147 2te had been promised to date, in response .to an appeal by circular, including £25» from the Public Works Department.- 7 A number of replies had been received from bodies that contributions could not he, made. ’ . ; The foUowing committee' was set up to take the banquet in hand with a recommendation, to Obtain prices for the catering for 18Q to 200 persons:. Messrs Gunning, Carter and Murray It was also resolved that the matter of refreshments at Mangaore be left tQ this .committee to make arrangements for, if found necessary. Messrs Bums, Hyde, Thwahes and T. King were appointed a committee to make arrangements for decorating the streets and hall-.
i Messrs Andrew and Tippler were appointed to take in: hand the children’s entertainment, it being resolved •that the children be entertained at the Domain in the morning'and at a pic- ’ tee entertainment in the' afternoon. It was also, a recommendation that the teachers and school committee be asked to co-operate and to apply for a holiday for the school children on the opening day. * x The question of transit to and from Mangaore was left to. Messrs Curran and. Beard tQ arrange,. and private car owners to be asked to assist on the day. -v, A finance committee consisting of Messrs Carter, Thwaites*. and Gunning'wa§ set tip. v ; Resolved that Mess* Thwaites, Burns and Murray be a toast commity f ’ ® GENERAL/
Mr Thwaites moved, .and Mr Andrew seconded, that it be a' recommendation. to tjhe Minister of Public Works thajt (the opening day take place on a Monday for preference, or any other day than Saturday. ■ It-was resolved that prices be obtained from the-'Palmerston (North, Levin and Foxton Bands. An offer was received from the Maori String Band to play at the banquet Their offer was accepted. • Mr Hotchen, of Levin, offered to place liis bus at- the disposal of the. committee.—A letter to be forwardedto him accepting his offer and thanking him. • . ■ • The secretary was instructed to forward an invitation to the .GovernorGeneral, Lord JelUcoe, to attend the function. ' . - ■ .' It was resolved that, the next meeting be held on 'Thursday evening next, when reports from the committees will be received.
