The cnairman stated that when the Tararua road was metalled, it was none in such a way that it would have lasted quite well down to tne present day, with tiie traffic which would be on it from the settlers! use only. Tm sawmilling company’s traffic broke the road and they should be responsible for its repair, Cr. Harkness protested that the motion proposed by Cr. Catley was against the whole policy of the County. The Company liad broken the road to pieces, and as the result of a previous resolution of the County, it had been compelled to put it in repair. Now it was suggested* that this resolution be' rescinded.

Cr. Catley then moved and Cr. Harkness seconded pro forma that relief be afforded on the lines indicated by him. After discussion, the motion was defeated, it being agreed that representatives of the Company be asked to meet the Council with a .view to arriving at a permanent understanding.
