FAINTED SHOES.

: Brocade evening shoes are still expensive to buy, and it is a boon to know that an excellent imitation can be achieved with an ordinary pair or white or pale coloured satin shoes (it will not matter if they are soiled! and a few paints! First draw with a pencil a pattern of conventional liowers and leaves on the shoes. It is not necessary to bo an artist for- this, as the shape of the design 'is unimportant; it is only to indicate roughly where to put the colour. •

Paint the background of the shoes a deep blue, using good water colours and very little water. The addition or a little Chinese white makes the paint thicker. Use dull pink for the flowers and soft green for the leaves. A second coat may- be necessary to give an even surface and a deep tone. When the paint is quite dry, with a fine brush and some gold ink draw irregular the shoes. These look like gold-thread. The flowers and leavesvean also be outlined with |old •if a richer effect is desired.

The shoes may be finished with suitable buckles with “poufs” of tulle to enhance their charm. If the paint gets rubbed off a little with continual wear it will not spoil the shoes; it will only give them a rather more blurred appearance, which is quite pleasing.
