SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tttie fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers oil Tuesday evening. Pi^eseait —His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Murdoch) and Ore. Gunning, Curran, Hyde, Butt. An apology was received from. Gr. Beard. CORRESPONDENCE.
From S. Hamilton notifying thatshe will not be renting the Borough house in Stout Street. —Resolved that the next applicant, Mr Briggs, drawn in the ballot take the house. From Publip Trust Office re alterations tq premises in the estate of S. R. Jones, requested by the Health.lnspector, advising that one of the beneficiaries intends residing in the dwelling as soon as possession can be obtained and that they intend adding two more rooms and enlarge ing the front rooms to make the house more presentable, and at the same time will arrange to have the necessary repairs effected. The present tenant has been given -.a week’s notice to quit and as soon as possession can 'be obtained the inspector’s requirements will be carried out.—Resolved to extend the time for completing the work to "two months. The Patea County Council wrote stating they will have 60 tons of bitumen for disposal upon arrival in Wellington about the middle of October, the price being about £8 8s per ten nett weight.—Received. An application was received from J. A. Roach for permission to erect a temporary shed in corrugated iron on the back end of his section in Plimmer Terrace.—Granted. ENGINEER’S REPORT.
The Engineer reported that the main line of 8-inch service pipes had now reached the Borough boundary and he hoped within a few days to be into Grand street. As soon as the air valves and the. various connections have been closed up, which will take a day or two, the pipes will be tested under "pressure. Along the lengths oi 8-inch pipes all the bends have been concreted with concrete blocks. He had at the request of the Road Committee located tne angles in Stout and Bailance streets preparatory to spending about £l5O in three streets for an eight-foot formation of footpaths. Bailance street footpath had been graded and the grading would be completed in the other two. in a week’s time. There is about 12 leet of water in the reservoir and so far no leaks are showing. - ROADMAN’S REPORT;
The roadman reported as follows: “I have carted 72 yards of metal on to. the following streets:—Bailance, Sheehan, Vogel, Grey, East road and Plimmer Terrace. The water tables in Plimlner Terrace, East RQadj, Nathan Terrace and Vogel street have been cleaned out. I have also put in concrete pipes in drain in Vogel street and fined in and planted trees in plot in Plimmer Terrace. * : WATERWORKS LOAN.
The Mayor stated that he had been looking, over the amount of money spent on the waterworks to date and the amount of work yet to be done aind he had found there will not be enough-money,— He-estimated that another £llOO will be required. He said it would not be necessary to take a poll for that amount as the Council were allowed under Section 18 of the Municipal Act to. raise up to IQ per cent, on any loan. Cr, Gunning stated that the Engineer had assured him in the last lew days that the work could be completeu for £II,OQO.
The Engineer said that since his original estimate, the Council had taken the. work up the creek which had involved a further £6OO or £7OO. He was- satisfied the work would be completed with the 10 pea’ cent, added winch he had included when giving Cr. Gunning the assurance that the work could be done for £II,OOO.
The Mayor pointed out that if more than £llOO was required a poll of the ratepayers would have to be taken. it was resolved that the Mayor be authorised to borrow £llOO on the best terms procurable. Gr, Hyde enquired during the discussion in reference to the charge for street connections stating that the understood thei (Engineer had said they would cost each person £2 10s. if so he thought the charge too high, and unfair as in his opinion a person should be charged-according to distance from the main.. The Engineer pointed out that this would" bring about complications and stated it had been the practice in ocner places to make a standard charge. /Tins matter was referred to the Waterworks Committee. GENERAL.
Cr. Hyde asked what was l?eing done in reference to the proposed 'street improvements. Tlie Engineer pointed out that it had been held over to ascertain whait i the Government intended doing in -respect to highways. The Council (had written to the Department but -had not received a reply.—The Town Clerk was instructed tQ write again tor particulars.
Cr. Gunning reported that the Power Board had .voted a sum towards the Mangahao celebrations. In respect to the charge for meters he considered it best to hold the matter over until the whole district had been linked up* ' The Mayor reported that a special meeting would have to be held to deal with the Mangahao opening. The Town Clerk stated that so tar the following public bodies had notified that they would contribute towards the function:—'Pahiatua, Qtaki, Marton FeUding, Levin, Palmerston N., Lower Hutt Borough Councils, Oroua, Kairanga, Butt, Horowhenua, Pohangina Counties, Bannevirke, ManaVratu, Oroua, Tararua Power. Boards and Levin and Shannon Chambers of , Commerce.
