TRYING-OUT AT MANGAHAO.

TRIAL RUN EXPECTED THIS WEE& Further tests or the machinery controlling the different portions of the Mangahao. hydro-electric scheme, were made Tuesday when the control gates on the Arapeti and Mangahao tunnels were operated, ahd found to bo working satisfactorily. A slight hitch occurred at the Arapeti gate where the winch raising and lowering it through the control shaft was found to be working with difficulty, it was necessary. to allow; a certain amount of water out of Arapeti to permit of the trouble being rectified, and the con-_ . tractor for tne supply of the winch had to. make some adjustments before everything worked smoothly.

At present the water is hanked up in the Mangahao dam tq a height of several feet above the level of the No. 1 tunnel, being held here by the control gates. .Hie level of the water in the dam is regulated by means of the by-pass tunnel, it being essential that it should not rise to a height which would endanger the work under construction should a flood occur. The next step in the development of the work will be the turning in of the water to the pipes. In both Mangahao and Arapeti everything is ready today, but some riveting in the power house,, where the pipe-line connects with the turbines , bras caused a little delay. To-morrow morning, however, providing nq unexpected hitch occurs, the filling of the pipes is timed to take sPlace. The testing out of the machinery will be, as may be a careful and lengthy process, hut once the tuahinefc are running it will be a matter only of a Short and definite period until the “juice’ ’is available to Horowhenua.
