GOATS TERRORISE CITY.

POLICE LASSO SQUAD CALLED UPON. NEWARK, N.J., July 17. Police protection from the attacks of 100 wild goats was asked of ActingChief James Mcßell to-day. The goats captured the streets in the iron bound district between the Pennsylvania .and New Jersey Central Railroad tracks, butted passengers off side-w.alks, Obstructed the passage of motor-cars, overturned garbage cans, and destroyed lawns and gardens. Chief Mcßell directed the police to round up the goats in co-operation with agents of the Humane Society. A lasso squad was organised. Although many members of the force established oontacts with the animals they were called upon to round up yesterday, only nine goats of the 100 that are roaming the streets had been captured last night. Led by Chief Mcßell and reinforced by a corps of dog catchers, health department officials, humane society agents, and a squad of detectives, the police started out armed with lassos and dog nets. Residents of the infested districts are spending the day w.atching the hunters ride up and down the streets on the running boards Qf their bucking flivvers. When the hunt began to-day, Lewis C. Teed, superintendent of the humane society, was missing. He left the battlefield after a hand-to-horn encounter with one of the goats and is reported to have changed his mind concerning their need for protection. No one apparently knows where the goats came from, but those captured are being held in the municipal pound for redemption at two dollars a head. People who were butted into calling on the police for assistance are considering having all claimants arrested for violating an ordinance in giving the animals too much freedom.
