FAMOUS COW DIES.

FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE GETS “TILLY.” One of the outstanding tragedies of the foot and mouth epidemic in California is the dismal fact that the world’s most famous dairy cow was sacrificed to prevent the spread of the infection. As almost every dairyman knows, Tilly Alcartra for a number of years'held the world’s record for milk production, a fact that was heralded throughout th e dairy world. As a result of this she was in great demand at expositions and shows, and it is doubtful if ever in the history of cowdom a dairy animai had' more admiring eyes cast upon her than was the case with Tilly. She is the only bovine that ever entered the portals of the aristocratic Palace Hotel in San Francisco, on which occasion she was an honoured and 'feted guest while at the height of her glory. Ati her advanced age, which is over fifteen years, Tilly became an irregular breeder during the past few years, and in an effort to perpetuate her greatness through more off-spring, she was sent to Southern California for breeding, where she was in contact with other cattle that contracted the disease, and she became the victim of a drastic campaign to "stamp foot and mouth disease out of California.
