COLOUR PUZZLE IN FLOWERS

MYSTERY OF BLUE AND YELLOW Sweet pea experts of England arc trying to discover why no one type of flower can be produced both >u yellow and blue varieties.. “Take any type of flower such as the rose, the daffodil, the tulip, or any other, and you can be certain that if you can get it in blue colouring you cannot get it in yellow, and vice versa,” said an official of the National Sweet Pea Society.

“When I say blue I moan a real, definite dark blue, and by yellow, I mean real yellow, like the buttercup. The most blue looking sweet pea we have achieved is a very pale-looking flower, and. the nearest approach to yellow is a cream sweet pea. “Wc are aiming at producing a buttercup-yellow sweet pea and a gentian-blue type, but it will be many years before we can hope to succeed. At the Duke of Northumberland’s house at Brentford, we have experimented with seeds from New Zealand San Francisco, and practically from every part of the world . “This year’s sweet pea developments are: A flower of an orange colour that does not burn or fade in the sun. Improved t exture and ability of a flower to travel. A definite movement back to the sweetly fragrant sweet pea.”

that happens in the brief span of earthly life makes us feel that the present life is but the prelude to another, the beginning of a course which is not closed nor finally determined here, but a course that goes on and :is worked out to its full meaning in conditions of which we know little, but what Christ dias revealed. Those questions involve a frank treatment of such matters as sin and punishment and what it means for every one yet to appear before the judgment seat of God. The very notion of a moral purpose involves an inviolate justice on the Eternal throne as well as the rainbow above the throne. There is uttermost truth in the lines from “Gerontius.” Learn that the flame of Everlasting Love Both burn ere it transforms;

And what gives us confidence in the greatness and righteousness of til© Divine purpose is the sternness of the moral law within.

What an opportunity lies before the Church of God at the present time to give men and women something to rest upon. A mere philosophy of life is not enough. To find rest we must come near to the Divine Personality of the flaming centre of the world’s light; We must have God. We cannot rest in forces, or tendencies, or probabilities, but only in One, who is Love, whose we are and in whom we have our being. Unless the world is God’s and unless we can see that somehow good is the final goal of all ill, ther e is no abiding calm for. the .troubled spirit and no true rest for the soul. The Church has to-day one of the greatest opportunities ever placed before her, that of. guiding her members and adherents amongst the reefs and shoals of a wild coast line, ol taking hold, of men and safely piloting them over the jagged rocks of this mortal life, and heading them into a harbour of peace and a haven of rest. But ah! Why are we failing to give this rest? Simply because our own houses are not in order, we want to bring those who are . outside the Church and we want to get back ourselves a livily faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is our true life of rest. And if we ar© going to do this, we must be equipped to the highest degree, with a holy passion for God and His people. Many a person has gone to Church crying out in the depth ol their souls: “Where shall I find rest? ’ and they have gone away feeling disappointed, owing to the minister’s having given a deep intellectual discourse, instead of endeavouring to move the hearts of his hearers and make them right. We who have been called to preach are not here to display our own greatness, nor to exhibit our own greatness, nor to exhibit our own genius. We have been called as ministers, helpers of others. We are also looking for this rest. Only last Sunday I went hom e from the service with these words in my heart: “Wliat do my sermons count for; is it 'really worth while giving all the hours of preparation?” Was it because my faith was weak, or was it because you had forgotten to pray? The story is told of a Church in Scotland where the people had all assembled, but the minister did not put in an appearance, the beadle was sent by the officers to look for him-and he found him in the vestry speaking with someone. The beadle returned and told the officers, and they said: “Go back and listen and see if you can distinguish from th© voice, who it is.’’ After a while he came back and said: “Yes, I know, who it is. He is saying “1 will not go in, unless you go with me. I have gone in too many times alone. I have preached too many sermons without you. I will not go unless you go with me. And the officers said: "We know who it is, we will wait.” Very soon the vos'ry door opened and the minister entered the pulpit, but there was another with him, although they could not see Him with their eyes. And as that minister ros e to preach there came upon that audience a Pentecostal blessing. Prayer, much prayer, Is necessary if we are going to find and give rest.—J.M.S.
