FASHIONS AND FANCIES.
SOME SUMMER PREDICTIONS. Summer dresses will too dclightl'ul this season—fragile affairs that at the same time are not entirely unpractical, for they fold easily, pack into small space; do not crease as stiffer garments have the way of doing, and do not require starching. Some are transparent, others are not. At any rate, the washing slip is an easy matter. Crepe de chine is largely favoured for more solid gowns, not being transparent, neither are the new soft makes of linen. The thinner voiles and orepellas are cool and effective; every garment has to be, slim in effect, straight and simple—and yet never was dress so attractive. To be simple, however, signifies skill and taste, and further, the all-in-one frock requires careful “putting-on,” for many a good model is ruined by a casual wearer. Style is an essential quality, yet the model is easy and comfortable (writes “A Londoner" under (the date of June 1.)
For example, take a model frock now being exhibited in a London dress display. The frock, elegant slim, and subtly simple, is of a character to suit the girl or older woman equally well, A fine new make of linen is chosen in a rose-pink shade, and this has a deep yoke and wide insertions of decoupe embroidery known as “Richelieu” work —most effective and ideally light for a summery creation. Nearly all such frocks are sleeveless; as cool frocks should be. The beige crinoline shady hat is a fitting completion, and here again an atttractiv e decoration is shown in the shape of a big pink water lily with its drooping and superb shade of green stalk and foliage. Further, a pink taffeta sun-shade with fringed edge is carried, • the lining of which shows a row of applique rosebuds and leaves. In these days the art of shopping has —like good dressing—to be acquired; but it is most helpful to find a charming frock, hat, parasol, coat and cape all together. So loften one spoils the other, and spells sartorial niin!
