TURNING ON THE POWER.
CELEBRATIONS at SHANNON. I On Saturday morning a large and i representative gathering of members /of public bodies 'interested in the j turning on of the povvar from Manga- ! hao met in the Shannon Borough I Council Chambers to arrange for a ! suitable celebration on the occasion. 'Mr W. Murdoch. (Mayor) presided I and among those present were file following: Messrs J- A. Nash and J. Linklater, M.P.’s, McEwan (Mayor of Petone), ’Matthews (Pahiatua County Council), Holms (Levin Chamber ol Commerce), A. Dinnie (Public Works Department), Davis (tftaki Borough Council), Goldsmith (Horo\yhenua Power Board), H. Barber (Horowhenua County Council), Thwaites (Shannon Chamber of Commerce), and many others. A large number of apologies were received. Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., said they could not. let the ocoasion pass without a proper function to show their appreciation. The event was a national one Avhich should be carried -out in a fitting way as they all vunted the opening to be a success. The Prime Minister, the lit. Hon. W, F. Massey, Avould be present to turn on the poaver which Avould take place about the middle of next month. Mr Nash then moved and Mr Linklater seconded, “That the opening ceremony take place at Mangaore immediately after the arrival of the train bearing the Premier, to be followed by a banquet in the Druids’ Hall—Carried. It Avas also .agreed that arrangements toe made for entertaining the children at the works, and at a . picture show in the evening, AVhile a social and, dance is to be arranged for the adults'. „ . It Avas left to the Shannon Borough Council ahd Chamber of Commerce to draw up a scale of contribution for each local body interested in the matter of defraying the cost of the celebrations, Avhich will be submitted l'°r their approval. ... It was decided that, the Mayor (Mi Murdoch) preside over the celebrations. . , e The Mayor, in returning thanks, said there was no parochial feeling. It was only that -they Avanted to nttinglv celebrate the -occasion by showing, appreciation of the courageous undertaking the Government have carried -out • , . . v , A vote of thanks to -the chair terminated file meeting.
