N.S.W. PARLIAMENT SURPRISED.

MR DETTMANN'S REPORT. If Mr H. S. Dettmann, M.A., 8.G.5., (Oxon.), is remembered for nothing else, it will be for the memorable report of his first term as headmaster Oi Sydney Grammar School, says the "Guardian." The report, -which dealt with last year's work, was tabled in the Assembly by th e 'Minister for Education. It would be safe to say that never before has Parliament received such a bright and.breezy report; but some ot th c members expressed the opinion that it was "not in keeping with the dignity of Parliament." Here; ar e some extracts from tho , report:—"This, my first annual report, must be curt. I have been headmaster but one term. I give some figures'and some facts, with the facts even more: reliable than the figures.

"School Sport.—As this side or school life is not undervalued, I devote to it a special paragraph!/ For many years the athletic pre-eminence of Grammar has-been the wonder and admiration of the entire community, from the Judges on the Bench to the Headmasters' Assodiation, and the linguistic experts at Cockatoo Island. "We won the boat race, but recently we have sustained a series of. disasters. That is to say, in a field of seven or eight schools, our rivals and brothers, we have come second instead i of first. This coincides to some extent] with the change of headmasters. "School Buildings and Equipment. —When I saw the school in August It was slightly sliop-worn. "I report formally that I am satisfied that I have an able, loyal, keen, and reasonably-contended staff,"

Th e report was neatly arranged, In a green ribbon band. It deserved, the distinction!
