THREE MEN DROWNED.
PLUCKY RESCUE BY FISHERMAN IN OLD CANOE. WAIRQ4 August 27. Police-sergeant Wa4e received .word that a motor-launch, containing a party of six t capsized whije fishing off Whakaki about 10 o'clock this morning. Three natives—Peru SoloWi Toko Hamana, and a. new •arrival—were drowned. The qther three reached the .shore safely. Further details show that six natives «uid two EurQpeans went out in a whalebQat. for tho purpose of Ashling off the coast. There was a heavy runout of the Whakaki lagoon, which was opened the previous day, and the boat was caught in a strong current. The occupants were helpless ( and one native stood up. His action 'caused the rowers to miss a stroke on an incoming wave and one oar snapped.* The 'boat turned broadside on amd #ie neX { wave swamped and upset it" and the oars were swept, away immediately. Taylor, Kokinoki Paku and. Riki Huaka, managed to swim ashore with difficulty. Wiremu Walker, who was fishing from the beach saw the accident, launched an. old canoe and was able 4o rescue Eric Rogers alive and recover the body of Puru Solomon. Barney Huka and Wi Toko Hamana . were drowned,, but their bodies have not been recovered.
Walker's heroic action is worthy of proper recognitiojn. He risked bi» life in a very old canoe by going out into the rip. All the victims are married. Huka has no children, Hamana two and several dependants-. Puru Solomon has a family of 21, seven of whom are under sixteen and tihe youngest four months.
