COMPULSORY GRADING OF CREAM.
( “WISE TO DELAY LEGISLATION,” SAYS MINISTER. Recently Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., communicated with the Minister for Agriculture in reference to the grading of cream and has now received the foliowing reply: “The subject of grading cream i s receiving a good deal o>f attention from those interested in the man ulacture of butter in New Zealand. The necessity of 'maintaining or improving the quality of New Zealand butter is recognised, and the principle of cream grading is extending very considerably on the voluntary basis. As in the past, officers of the Dairy Division are rendering encouragement and assistance in connection with the extension of this movement. Title question of making the grading' of cream compulsory has not been discussed very generally, .and it isjknown that, in some districts, wherewoluntary grading is being carried on, the suggestion of ‘compulsion’ does meet, with unanimous favour. I am of opinion it might be wise to delay leg-1 islation until such time as -the matter I is more thoroughly discussed, and the general- consensus of opinion more in favour of making the practice compul. sory.”—Standard
