JURIES AMENDMENT.

BILL DEFEATED ON- SECOND READING. WELLINGTON, Last Night The House spent to-night on the second reading of the Juries Amendment Bill, the measure which the Hon. John McGregor, of the Legislative Council, lias tried for years do have made law. The Bill provided that a five-sixths majority might be accepted in criminal cases, except capital cases, and that a trial might be continued, notwithstanding that the jury, might be reduced in number. The Bill received the support of nearly all the Reformers, but a few voted against it, and.the.second reading was defeated by 33 votes to 29.
