SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Snannon Btquougn Council was held in the Council chambers on Tuesday evening. Present His Worship tins Mayor (Mr \V. Murdoch) anu Crs. Beard, Gunning, Carter, 'Murray and Butt.

CORRESPONDENCE. A From tfie secretary ©1 the ShaMon Co-op.- Dairy Co., regarding mx bags of cement short-paid on their account and now in dispute, placing beiore the Council the ioiilowing lacts: —(1) "That the cement in question, all or part, was""-used by the Council; (2) that no definite proof oi" damage was established, l'or in order to pla.ce my claim beiore the merchant, I asked to see the damaged goods and unfortunately, I could not do so, as same had been used on your works and consequently the) Council will realise my, chances of making a definite claim on our merchants was. nil, and consequently we have no other redress than to ask for payment of same." —Resolved that /the account be paid. From Minister of Public Works advising that -the carpenter's shed at Mangaore can be disposed of in three or four months' time, the value placed on it being £2o.—Accepted with thanks.

From County Clerk, Horowhenua County Council, ae letter from Borough Council in reierence to flood gate on Mr Bryant's property arid the information supplied by-Air G. N. Stephenson, stating- toe matter had come before his Council on the 9th inst. He advised that no trace can be found of any agreement as mentioned by the ■Council. His ' Council,, however, in order that the matter might be fully discussed, would, be pleased to meet representatives ol the Comicil on the ground at a date-to be arranged.—lt was decided .that the Mayor and Crs. Curran and Gardner and the Engineer be appointed tQ meet the representatives, of the Horowhenua County Council on a date to be fixed by latter and a letter to this effect be torwarded to them. In the meantime an inspection will be made.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. -The .engineer (Mr Edwards) reported as follows:—-The particular bends over which there has been some sßgnt delay came to hand last week and tne men "are now, working making tne continuous connections at the reservoir end of the 8-incn pipe. 1 was informed by the Engineer oi the Spiral Pipe Co. mat the balance oi fittings will be at Shannon to-day. As soon as all. these parts are distributed along the length of tins pipe, which will take about two days, the spiral Pipe Co.'s man will be phoned for and this work carried on until complete. As per instructions from the Road

Committee I will take levels and peg out footways in -Stout, Ballance and ...Vance streets. 1 expect to do this work early next week. Cr. Beard asked the Engineer if he could tell them approximately what the w.ater scheme had cost to date. The Engineer said the Town Clerk had all the particulars, which ii he w'iis furnished''with, he would then be able to give them the cost to date . arid how much more money would be required. Murray stated he hud received a complaint from a person who was renting a paddock through whi'en there as an unused roadway which is fenced in, that persons are in the habit of deliberately opening tlhe gate and letting his stock out. The complainant wished toi know if he has any •T*Pfl T*-Pfift Cr. Carter said the Council should make it clear that where roads are fenced in and not required by the Council no one has any right to open gates or cut wires. Cr. Gunning said the property mentioned belonged to"him and was leas, ed to the complainant. He said he had had the same experience and objected to grazing people's stock on his section under the-'pretence that they were grazing on the road.

It was decided not to issue a summjons against complainant whose stock had been impounded. A permit was granted to the Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co., to make additions to their stare. The Mayor said a meeting fco con--sider celebrating the turning on of the power at Mangahao was being held at Shannon on August 29th, and that the chairmen of the various local bodies and power hoards has been invited, to send along representatives.
