SHANNON STREET IMPROVEMENTS.
A EEL) EUR FOUq^ATHS. At tite last Borough. Council meeting Civ beard, referring to file shocking state 01 ttie approacues to some ol the nomes in the Borough, saifi lie; did not think they should wait ior the proposed road .improvement loan, hut authorise the Road Committee to immediately spend the money now on’ the estimates lor footpaths and give these people access to their humps) Footpaths in many streois were badly needed. ' Cr. Carter : I\don?t believedn p.atcli\vork, but tliese footpaths have got to he done. It is impossible to get out of some properties without getting over your boot-tops in mud.' Cr. Gunning said he did not think the present time was opportune for raising loans and the money on the estimates was for permanent footpaths. If the footpaths are put down at the proper level the money would not be wasted even if the paths had to be opened up for the sewerage .and drainage. He supported Cr. Beard’s suggestion.
Gr. Hyde: When I brought forward the proposal to raise the loan no 'one raised objection and it is absolutely wrong to now try hud turn down the resolution. <
Cr. Beard: I do not suggest turning down the proposal for a loan, but the footpaths must be attended to at once.
The Mayor said they must have patience. A lot of money wouild be saved if the work was done after the water and drainage.
Cr.. Beard; I would sooner see the money spent on footpaths now and flie other proposal dealt with later. Cr. Hyde contended they should put the loan proposal before ’the ratepayers immediately 'and if carried get on with the work. , -
Cr. Curran: There are a lot of people who will get no benefit from the loan.
Cr. Carter: Every ratepayer should be taken into consideration on a loan of this kind. I don’t agree with Cr. Curran as I think every penny spent in the town benefits every ratepayer. I think when the lea'll is being put to the ratepayers it should bo £SOOO instead of £3OOO as I think it will all'be required. It is time we put it to the ratepayers. Cr. Gunning agrried with Or. Carter that the scheme did not go as far as he would like and lie would like to see it extended further. Or. Carter: Because we live in Shannon why shouldn’t we have these conveniences. If the town is made more atttractiye more houses will* he built and more people will come here to reside. The advantages should he brought to the fore and not hidden. Cr. Butt: Does the .Council want the £IOO spent on the footpaths now? Tile Mayor and Councillors: Yes! On permanent footpaths. At (.his juncture the Engineer submitted a report ias to the cost of road and footpath improvements. The report was referred hack to him, to include extra streets in the scheme and it \v.a,s further ,resoly6d that-When the report is completed a special meeting of the Council will be held to consid-er-the matter and place the proposals before the ratepayers.
