Shannon News FRIDAY, JULY 18, 1924.

The many friends ofMr -C. G. Franks will, be < pleased to' learn that he is progressing favourably after the operation he underwent on Sunday last. A meeting of of the Bowling Club will be held in .the Pavilion this, evening to discuss carrying out improvements to. tlie green for the coming season,'. The final results of the recent Joy Ray Carnival was that the Green Committee was placed first, Reds second, Golds third and Purples fourth. The final cash results of the Carnival/will be made known next week. A n advertisement appears in this issue by the Makerua Drainage Board calling ienders for clearing 174 chains of stopbank fine on both banks of main drain from Riggins’ tram bridge to Hume’s on Tane road. Tenders close on Saturday, July 36th.

At the School Committee’s meeting attention was drawn by members to stock encroaching on the school ground. It was decided that the Borough Council be asked to advise the Ranger to keep a look out for future, occurrences of this kind, as the ground would soon be planted with shrubs which- might be destroyed. At a large meeting of employees of Messrs A v -and L. Seifert’s Flaxdressing Company, it was decided to hold the annual ball in the Druids’ Hall, Shannon, on Friday, 15th August. This ball with its novel decorations, is always looked, upon by people all over the district as the event o,f the season. At this week’s -euchre and dance (which is held fortnightly in the Parrish Hall on Tuesday evenings), there was a record attendance for -this season and both the euchre and dancing was most enjoyable. The winners in the euchre tournament were: Ladies, Mrs Bowler 1, Mrs W. Satherley 3; Gents, Mr J. Duschenski 1, and Mr Noel Gunning 2.

Eleven degrees of frost was experienced in theWairarapa last night, the highest so. far this winter.

The question of the appointment of an office • assistant was considered at Tuesday’s meeting of the Horowhenua Power ' Board, when 36 applications were received. Mr W. A. snarp, at present) clerk and ..collector to the Palmerston North Hospital Board, was chosen for the position. It was reported by the Horowhenua Power Board on Tuesday that three dairy factories within the Board’s district, yi?., Levin, shannon, and Manakau, had already decided to instal electricity for all purposes. Negotiations were proceeding with the remainder and it was hoped that they would all join up in due course. Nine informations laid against N. I. W. Brown (Rongotea), of transporting over the Paekakariki Hill mo.re than one .and .a-half tons to each pair of wheels was dismissed hy Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court. It was submitted by Mr J. Graham (Feilding), who appeared for the accused, that there was no proof that the lorries had gone oyer the hill; and .secondly, if they had, .the defendant was not driving the lorries. There was no proof that he had anything to do with the transportation. No longer do factories voice a complaint of an insufficiency of female labour. A change has come ovier the scene in Christchurch. In the past few days a clothing factory advertised for a girl. There were 40 appliants. Thirty-fiv© girls turned up in a hopeless quest of a single job announced by a fancy leather factory. These are not .isolated instances. Few girls prefer to stay at home in these days, and the improved conditions of the factory work compared with those that used to rule has made this class of employment extremely popular. Unfortunately, many classes of factories are experiencing a lean time, and cannot absorb the labour offering.
